Breakaway  -  By Violet Allen
We are all very happy about the renovation of the old Maytown School and excited about the activities going on there.  We are grateful for all the people responsible for creating and introducing these activities.
I feel one of the most beneficial achievements of MC has been the involvement of our young people.  Instead of gathering in the streets or on the corners in town, they are now at the school where they play, learn and enjoy organized games or gather for biking or camping trips.
Being a former teacher, I became interested and involved in Break Away, the after school program.  The aim of this program is to not only help youngsters improve their grades and self-esteem but to help them grow spiritually and emotionally.
After the tutoring sessions, adults and students sit around a big table together for a short devotional period and prayer.  Snacks are then enjoyed with lots of fun talk and often serious discussions.  Here adults have time to listen.
Since our group is made up mostly of boys, we are very fortunate to have Hubert Halbert, George Gray and Dan Chauncy to work with the older teens.  Their influence is most apparent in the change of attitude of some of our teenagers.
The most rewarding and pleasant experience for me has been seeing the friendship and trust that develops between mentor and child.  It is a wonderful feeling to know that one has made a difference in the life of even one young person.
Please contact MC if you are interested in helping make a difference with youth.
