I often hear the comment, “ I wish I could do what you are doing, and each time I think to myself, “You can!”  For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Angela Koenig.  I have been a volunteer at MLLC since June.  It hasn’t always been easy!
My stay at Maytown has consisted of tarring roofs, building shelves (and I am far from a carpenter), mopping floors, camping, rough housing with kids, and everything in between.  Being in Maytown has been a great experience—one that I am privileged to be a part of.

I think the thing I enjoy most about being in Maytown is the people.  Everyone I have become friends with make it worthwhile.  One of the things I have loved since fourth grade is volleyball.  Every Monday, MLLC hosts a free volleyball night.  The turn out varies in number and ages every week, but it is always fun.  It’s not necessarily the volleyball either; it’s being with everyone and having a good time.

Being in Maytown has taught me many life lessons too.  I have more patience, and most importantly, I have learned not to judge based on appearances.

At this time in my life I could be in college with the rest of my friends, “experiencing life,” like most other 19 year olds.  Instead, I have chosen to put off college, and I find that I am experiencing life in ways I had never imagined.

I encourage everyone to do some sort of volunteer work.  It doesn’t have to be for a year, or even full time, but if you have never volunteered, you don’t know what you are missing out on.
