The Purpose:

The Maytown Center, believing that all people are created by God, works to bring together people of differing backgrounds to bring about good in the community.

· To help people develop the gifts God has given them through        opportunities to volunteer, work together on community
  projects, & classes.
· To provide opportunities for people to creatively use their gifts
  for good.
· To bring together people of different ages, faiths, backgrounds,
   families, incomes...

The Past:
The Maytown Center has been a place of learning since 1926.  It got its start as the Maytown School, where it not only housed grades K-12, but a host of memories.  It ended its school years as Maytown Elementary School, in 1996 when area schools were consolidated.  Being a small town, much of the life of the community centered on the shared experience of the school.  When the school closed, a strong tie that held the community together was severed.

The Present:
The Maytown School Buildings, after being left in a place of severe disrepair, were sold to Father Ralph Beiting, founder of the Christian Appalachian Project, in the summer of 1999.  The buildings are still in the process of being renovated.  There are three, separate buildings-the schoolhouse, which includes an auditorium, the Gathering Place (the former cafeteria), and a gymnasium.   A playground, walking track, and picnic shelter, which were gifts from the county, were completed in 2001.  People of the town have come in and cleaned, cooked for workers, sewed curtains, and raised monies for repairs.   We just put a new roof on the main building & Gym(3/25/04)--thanks to the help of many donations and to God! Many programs and events have been recently started, such as an after-school mentoring program, a fitness center, concerts, and a weekly teen events.  Many from the community have taken ownership in the center by volunteering to teach classes, clean, help with maintenance, and share their talents.

The Future:
Lots of plans are in the works for the immediate future of the  Center.  There is still much needed on the physical structure of the building.  Our hopes is to restore the auditorium and help give more opportunity for arts in the area.  And there are many more things we dream of seeing.  In the meantime we thank God for all that he has already brought about.  A longtime community member hung a poster to promote an upcoming event.  A portion of the poster read, "Another sign of the rebirth of Maytown," making reference to the refurbishing of the school.  This sentiment is why the Center was created-to revitalize not only a community, but also the spirits of the people who live in the area.
