| Are You Ready for Some Volleyball?
By Kathy Curtis (MC full time volunteer 6/05 to ?) I thought you might like to hear about one of my favorite things to do here in Maytown. It’s Monday Night Volleyball. We meet in the gym, and after a “Word of the day” from Dan, split into teams and have several games of volleyball before going over to the Gathering Place to play pool or cards or ping pong. It is a really neat time with people of all ages, genders and abilities playing together. When Beth, Dan and I went to Florida over Christmas, the volleyball group continued to meet and even added dodgeball to the mix. When we got back, Dan sat down with them and brain stormed about other things that the Maytown Center could offer them. It was a really neat meeting out of which plans for a caving trip, an outing to the Pikeville YMCA for wallyball (volleyball in a racketball court) and a field day with an obstacle course are all being planned. The thing that I really love is that the age group is mostly young adult. Here are a group of young people in their twenties and thirties that are trying to find fun things to do together that don’t involve drugs or alcohol. Many of them are members of the volunteer fire department. Most are residents of Maytown itself. All of them want to be here. It is so refreshing when adults seek out positive things to do. Until now, the majority of our ministry programs here were geared to kids and teens. And while at risk youth are still our primary focus, God has opened a door for us to offer healthy, fun activity for another generation. I ask that you pray for this new opportunity and all it can be for people who are searching for the love of Christ. Even if they don’t know it yet. |
| 4.3.06 Title: A Spirit Thing A few weeks ago I had the privilege to go to CA for a conference that was mostly paid for by Trips For Kids. The place we stayed was right outside of San Francisco and south of Muir Woods National Monument (a place where there are 250 foot redwood trees, that are over a 1,000 years old). I overheard one of the guys who went to Muir Woods saying, "I'm not a spiritual person, but that was a spiritual experience"[walking through the redwoods]. I got to thinking about that comment and I'd have to say we are all spiritual people, it's just that somehow or way we can lose touch with our spiritual side. A couple weeks ago we took a group of young adults to a beautiful cave in Jackson County, KY. Now we didn't see 250 foot tall trees, but the beauty still had an impact on all of us. It came in the form of rushing water, neat patterns of rock, signs of spring, etc. One of the guys said he had a sense of tranquility when we paused for a time of silence in the cave. Maybe that's why I love to get out in God's amazing creation--to awaken my spirit, God's spirit. I also think that's why I enjoy taking others out in His creation. Hope you have a chance to get out and be still and in awe of God's creation and allow your spirit to be moved! Even if it is just studying a spring flower. It is a spirit thing! Peace to you, Dan |
